Upper James RCD
Serving the Upper James River Watershed

Projects

We group our projects into four main categories: Outdoor Recreation, Water Resources, Land Conservation, and Environmental Education.  Here are some examples of our projects in each category.
OUTDOOR RECREATION

  • Public Park Planning and Development – We will establish a workgroup to assess the public park resources in our region and inventory their assets and needs.
  • Brushy Blue Trail – We will assist the Central Shenandoah Planning District in whatever way we can to further the establishment of the planned Brushy Blue Trail.
  • Dark Sky Preserve – We will establish a work group to research possibilities for establishing a “dark sky preserve” in our region.

WATER RESOURCES

  • Citizen Water Quality Monitoring Network – We will evaluate the needs of citizen monitoring programs in the basin and supply assistance as possible.
  • Rockbridge Groundwater Study – Although we did not discuss this as a group at the June 15th meeting, an ongoing project of the Upper James Roundtable has been a collaborative effort among interested citizens and Rockbridge County to measure springs and map aquifers in the watershed of the Maury. It has been funded by the Army Corps and I hope it will continue to be a project of the Roundtable.

LAND CONSERVATION

  • Easement Seminar – We will hold a public meeting to discuss and educate the general public about every type of easement program that is currently available. We will work with VCC, SWCDs, and state agencies on this.
  • Low Impact Design (LID) Workshop – We will sponsor a public informational meeting on Low Impact Design.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

  • Speakers Bureau – We will develop a speakers list on all the subjects that we are focusing on and distribute it as widely as possible to civic groups such as Rotary and Ruritan Clubs.
  • COMPLETED Outreach day at Lake Moomaw – We will have an outreach and education day at Lake Moomaw on September 17. There will be booths and presentations as well as enjoyable activities such as nature walks and kids fishing activities. Partners such as the Army Corps of Engineers, the Va. Game Dept., the National Forest and others will have displays and presentations. There will be a great mid day meal and a celebration of the resources of the upper James.
  • COMPLETED The Discovery Center at Douthat State Park – We will help the Discovery center in as many ways as we can. We will help get the word out about its capabilities. We will act as a vehicle to support their capital funding plan. We will convene an environmental education summit meeting of all EE providers in the basin.
